State Agency Description

The North Carolina Investment Authority (NCIA) is a separate and independent state agency, governed by a Board of Directors chaired by the State Treasurer, tasked with investing North Carolina’s $144 billion in pension assets. The NCIA was created effective July 1st, 2025, and assumed statutory investment powers and duties from the Department of State Treasurer effective January 1, 2026. Real Assets Equity has a target allocation of 18% of the total portfolio. NCIA invests through a range of active and passive investment vehicles, including co-mingled funds, co-investments, and separately managed accounts.

Role Description

We are seeking a full-time Portfolio Manager and an Investment Analyst on the Real Assets team to be based on-site in Raleigh, NC. In these roles, the Portfolio Manager and Investment Analyst will become Specialists in the asset class, which includes infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture and other natural resources. These roles support a team that conducts sector research, develops investment themes, evaluates fund sponsors, sources direct and co-investment opportunities, engages in due diligence and financial modeling, prepares investment memos, negotiates terms, and ensures compliance with internal policies. Investment professionals can expect to form relationships across the industry and be exposed to a broad spectrum of industry information and transaction deal flow.


Qualifications

For the Investment Analyst position, qualified candidates will likely have 1-5 years of experience working in a corporate, financial, or operations role and is prepared to assume immediate responsibility in support of NCIA's mission. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated superior academic performance from a competitive college or university and a desire to excel within the asset management industry.

For the Portfolio Manager position, qualified candidates will likely have 8-10 years or more of work experience in the financial markets with transaction expertise in one or more real asset sectors. Those with a degree in engineering, science, or finance and experience working in a private equity firm, pension fund, Sovereign Wealth Fund, endowment, or consultant firm may be best positioned to excel in this role. An advanced degree (e.g. MBA, MS) or certification (e.g. CFA, CAIA) may be advantageous, but not required.
